Is It Normal to Feel Nervous Before Your First Reading?

Is It Normal to Feel Nervous Before Your First Reading?

A woman once told me she'd rescheduled her first reading three times before she finally showed up. Not because she'd changed her mind about wanting one, but because every time the date got close, her stomach would tie itself in knots and she'd find a reason to push it back another week. When she finally sat down across from me, one of the first things she said was, "I feel silly admitting this, but I'm nervous."

I told her what I tell almost everyone who says some version of that sentence. It's not silly at all. It's actually one of the most common feelings people bring into this room.

I think the nervousness makes sense once you consider what's actually happening. You're not just meeting someone new or trying something unfamiliar. You're opening a door to a relationship that grief closed, at least in its old form, and there's no way to know exactly what's going to walk through it. That uncertainty alone is enough to make anyone's heart race a little, even someone who wants this more than almost anything.

Some people worry they'll be disappointed if nothing comes through clearly. Others worry about the opposite, that something will come through so vividly it will be more than they can handle emotionally in front of a stranger. A few have told me they're nervous they'll do something wrong, say the wrong thing, react the wrong way, somehow interfere with a process they don't fully understand. I've heard nearly every version of that anxiety over the years, and none of it has ever been something a person needed to apologize for.

What I try to remind people is that there isn't a wrong way to sit through a reading. You don't need to say anything clever. You don't need to prepare a speech. You don't even need to hold yourself together if emotion comes up, because it very often does, and that's never been a problem in my experience. The reading isn't testing you. It's simply making room for a conversation that's been waiting to happen.

I've also noticed that the nervousness almost always eases once the reading actually begins. The anticipation beforehand tends to be far more intense than anything that follows. Once evidence starts coming through, something familiar, something only they would recognize, the nerves quietly give way to something closer to relief. It stops feeling like a test and starts feeling like what it actually is, a reunion, even if a brief and unusual one.

If you've been putting off your first reading because the nervousness feels like too much to push through, I'd gently encourage you not to let it stop you indefinitely. That fluttering feeling in your stomach isn't a sign that something is wrong. It's usually a sign of how much this relationship still matters to you, and that's exactly the kind of heart that makes for the most meaningful readings.
