Common Myths About Mediumship, Debunked

Over the years, I've heard just about every misconception a person could have about mediumship, usually from someone sitting nervously across from me right before their very first reading. I don't blame anyone for believing these things. Movies, television, and a handful of bad experiences with less careful practitioners have shaped a lot of assumptions that simply don't match what this work actually looks like. (I used to believe in bad "ghosts" before learning mediumship!)

One of the most common myths is that a medium can summon anyone on command, as if death is a phone directory and I can just look up whoever you'd like to speak with. That isn't how it works, at least not in my experience. I don't control who comes through or when. I can invite communication, but I can't force a specific person to appear simply because that's who the sitter was hoping for.

Another myth I hear often is that a good medium should be able to answer any question instantly, with total certainty, the moment it's asked. Real communication with spirit doesn't function like a search engine. It unfolds more like a conversation, sometimes circling around a subject before arriving at it directly, sometimes leaving certain questions unanswered entirely for reasons that only become clear later, if they become clear at all.

People also frequently believe that mediumship is inherently dark or dangerous, something that opens a door best left closed. I understand where that fear comes from, but nothing in my own experience supports it. What consistently comes through in readings is love, reassurance, and connection, not anything sinister. The work has always felt, to me, like an extension of compassion rather than something to fear.

There's also a common assumption that mediums can read minds or know everything about a person's life without any information being shared. That isn't accurate either. What I receive comes from spirit, not from scanning a person's private thoughts, and a responsible medium should never claim otherwise.

Finally, I often meet people who believe that if a reading doesn't feel dramatic or overwhelming, it must not have been real. I'd gently push back on that one most of all. Some of the most meaningful readings I've ever witnessed were quiet, almost understated, built around small, ordinary details that meant everything to the person receiving them. Real connection rarely needs theatrics to be genuine.
